Please Help.

Received the EG4 Waterproof Lithium 36v for a gift.  Brand New.  It's for a trolling motor on boat.  It quickly charges to about 38.4 volts.  As soon as we try using our trollilng motor, the battery will show DEAD with less than 1 volt.  Tried this numerous times.  So frustrating having a $1200 battery and $4000 trolling motor and have to use an anchor to keep the boat in place.

I'm at a total loss here.  Suggestions, recommendations, i'm all ears.  Thanks in advance.

How many amps does the trolling motor take?

@95g-atl would you be able to provide make and model of trolling motor or a link to the specs.

In general, it kinda looks like something is triggering something in the BMS to into protection.  52A shouldn't do that.  But maybe there is something else going on.

When you say it charges to full quickly, how quickly is it?

Do you have the BT app connected to it?  Does it give you any information regarding faults or anything?

@joel-brodeur thank you for the replies and help.

My son is more of the expert than i am on your Q's.

He said last time he charged it from under 1 volt, it took about 15 minutes to get up to 38.4 volts.  I suspected something was wrong then.

I do not have the app connected to it.  I can have him get the BT app?

@95g-atl That would be great.  I am not certain if it will show faults or not, but it is worth a try.  In the meantime, would you have the make and model of the trolling motor?

@95g-atl

What are you using to charge the battery? How quick is "quickly charges to about 38.4 volts"? Note that 38.4V is a nearly dead battery (about 20% SOC), so that's not a full charge. Once fully charged, after removing the charger the battery should read about 40.5V if it's really full. While charging, when the battery is reaching near full and the charger is still providing voltage, the charging voltage should read about 43.2V

It looks like this battery model has Bluetooth. What is the Bluetooth app telling you about the battery status?

At 20% SOC, or maybe even less, at 38.4V I would expect a 52amp load to almost immediately put the battery into BMS shutdown mode. You need to figure out how to actually get a full charge into this battery.

@jlankford thank you for the reply.  I'm going to get my son to bring the battery inside and get it hooked up to the app.  had NO IDEA it had bluetooth.  wow.
I'll get the charger specs.

And it took about 15 minutes to get to 38.4 volts.  I'm going off what my teenaged son told me......so there's always that.

The charger model and specs will be important. For instance, if it is a 20 amp charger it's going to take about 5 hours to charge this battery. A 15 minute charge is nothing...

@jlankford Great catch, I looked over the manual and completely missed the charge curves.  🙂

The battery charger is the EG4 36v 10 amp.

funny thing i noticed is the battery charger light is always GREEN.  Even when it is not even hooked up to the battery.

@95g-atl Is this the charger?  EG4 Battery Charger | 36V 30A - Signature Solar   It indicates 30A?

And it looks like you don't trust the light on the charger, use the app instead.

@95g-atl

So, at 10amps it will take around 10 hours to fully charge this battery. Do you have the manual that came with the charger? Here is an excerpt from a manual I found online, but I have no idea if it's relevant to your charger or not...

Indicator Light
● Red indicator flashes every second: Battery Charge <80%
● Yellow indicator flashes every second: Battery Charge >80%
● Green indicator flashes every second: Battery Charge ~100%
● Green indicator on: Battery Charge 100% and not currently charging

*Note: It is not uncommon for LiFePo batteries to register directly from a red indicator to green due to the
charging graph for this type of battery. Do not be alarmed if you do not see the yellow flashing indicator.
** Even when the battery reaches 100%, the charger may still blink red for up to 30 minutes if cell
equalizing is needed.

Fault Indication
● Red indicator flashes every three seconds: Battery Abnormal
● Yellow indicator flashes every three seconds:Source Electric Anomaly
● Green indicator flashes every three seconds: Charger Abnormal
