Yes, that is correct. It also depends on how much voltage and amperage your strings are. However, if you decide to add another string later, you can connect it directly to the unused inputs. The inverter will parallel the new string with the existing strings on the same MPPT.

@eg4eric Sorry for the late reply (I thought I had notifications set up). Anyway, now I'm getting it. What a great feature of the 12000 xp. My set up is the EG4 12000 XP with two 280ah batteries. I used to only have 4000 watts of solar panels going in and then added another 4000 watts the other mppt. I'm totally off grid in the desert and to see those batteries fully charged by charged before noon is a great feeling. Now I know I can safely add more. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain the mppt inputs. I've been trying to figure it out in the manual but for some reason I couldn't wrap my head around it. I don't think it's explained very well. 👍

one important consideration is that all the input on each MPPT should be at or nearly at the same string voltage.

for example, you would not want to have a string of 8, and a string of 10 combined to MPPT1. Nor would you want two strings with different tilt or azimuth or shading conditions combined. Nor would you want to combine different PV modules, unless the Vmp are closely matched
