Frustration log excerpt day 3:

This 18Kpv inverter appears to be pretty awesome except for one thing. The manual and the setup instructions completely suck.  In fact, it's been said by many before and from reading the comments and questions it's apparent to me that this unit is lacking severely in the user guide department.  It is not just me having problems getting this thing to work as intended.

My problem:

All I am trying to do is peak shaving using battery storage with no PV panels - which is a simple concept but the setup info on this is worse than the IRS instructions for filing an itemized return for an S corp LLC.

As this clearly shows, it is 0800 and the confounded unit is eating up my battery that I want stored for the 1400-1900 hours when rates are highest.

This chart (to me) means that I am supposed to be using the battery this afternoon and not right now.  Why??? What??? Stop!!!!

Why is self consumption using battery power?  Where is this explained? How do I get this to NOT use battery power at any time other than peak shaving hours between 1400-1900?  I still only want to charge the battery between 1900-0600 when rates are lowest.  From 0600-1400 I want to just have grid passthru (when rates are low but not the lowest).

How hard can this be to set up?  "LOL watch this... Watch me make this guy regret buying this thing" said the writers of the documentation for this product.  Anyone have the secret setting(s) figured out?  Please share.  I dropped 5 grand on this giant box of mystery settings.

Frustration log continued:

Here is another one.  What does "quick charge" mean?  I would assume that in normal English it means "charge the battery" but in EG4 land it apparently means something different.  Maybe it's charging my AC in the car or making french toast.  Who knows.  But my guess is apparently incorrect.  Nothing is going into the battery.  What is it "quick charging"?  My OCD????

As an electrical engineer I cant even understand how this thing works and its obvious to me where the problem is.  The damn manual is terrible at explaining how the inputs affect how the unit functions.  Engineers are not tech writers.  I would know.  I am one.  I cant write documents for the average user of my products.  Well not good ones.  However there are experts in the world that can and they are called technical writers.

So.... Anyone get this thing to honor the user's request to use the battery only during peak shaving mode and not just whenever the sentient passive aggressive thing wants to?  I would love to know.  This makes no sense at all to me.  I have no PV panels yet so all I want is peak shaving.  Only during peak.  Not in self consumption mode. Im sure there is a setting for it but what it would be called is a mystery. So far I have not had any luck pushing buttons at random with my fingers crossed hoping for a miracle.

Can anyone end my frustration log?  I don't like writing.  Im not so good at it but I am really getting frustrated.

I recommend setting the PV Charge Priority to 100% or your desired SOC and configuring the battery priority timing accordingly. This setup allows the battery power to be used only as a last resort when no other power sources are available and outside of the times set, the inverter will power loads in the Self Consumption working mode.

As for the documentation, I will make these complaints known to our technical writing team.

@jared Do you mean this?  I will run this for a 24 hr cycle and see if this works. Thanks.

OK so the "quick charge" button takes a long time to kick in (15 minutes).  Not so quick to respond but maybe the charging will be quick...

Wish I could set the amperage limit separately for quick chare and regular AC charge.  Not that big a deal though.  Hopefully someone smarter than me can figure out how to get the charge/discharge settings right and I won't have to use the quick charge button again.

I can't offer any help on your questions. Do you have a copy of the manual that includes all of the user and installer settings? I've noticed that the online manual for the 18Kpv has recently been edited for some bizarre reason to remove the entire section of settings and their explanations. If you need a PDF copy of the previous version of the manual which includes the settings, I have it stored locally and can send it to you.

@jlankford Thank you I do have a hard copy that came with the inverter.  It is version 2.0.0.  Grid peak shaving is on pg 68 but is useless however it references "examples" on pg 84.  Pg 84 is the second page of the inverter's technical specs with no examples or anything about peak shaving.  If you have something more in depth I would be grateful.

If you  call signaturesolar.com they have been great live connecting to my 18kpv and making the changes AND describing the details.
