Suggestion Gridboss Smart Port overcurrent protection too sensitive

Hey EG4 staff!

I've got a GridBoss that is triggering smart port overcurrent protection unnecessarily. I've got a 2hp hydraulic pump motor on Smart Port #2, and that protection trips about 10% of the time I start the motor. That Smart Port has an 80A breaker feeding a subpanel, and the motor is on a 30A breaker. The subpanel has no other loads. I'm thinking the Gridboss is seeing the large inrush current during a current sample polling period, tripping the overcurrent protection.

Is there any way to make it behave more like a thermal fuse?

Secondly, is there any way to clear an error with the Gridboss without shutting down all power to it?

Probably related to this issue. It sounds like there is a software fix, perhaps not released in an official build yet...

Fascinating read, thank you for sharing. This makes a lot of sense. I'm concerned that the relays are being opened for overcurrent protection when they are not rated to make/break at those currents. I hope the software OCP becomes disabled because of that reason.

I just ran into this scenario today, when the heat pump for my swimming pool turned on and the gridboss immediately didn't like that. I found this fault in the Event History: "MIDBOX_FAULT_012: Smart Port 3 over current".

How did the folks in that thread get the new firmware if its not released yet? I'm hoping I can benefit from it too.

Is there any way to clear the faults besides powering down the gridboss?

Read the thread. It sounds like the vendor has installed several test SW iterations into his system during the troubleshooting process, and the latest one appears to be working.

@jlankford Thanks, I read it but I wasn't sure if there was any way for end users to load the new firmware.

Do you know how to clear the existing faults on the gridboss?

@zali

I don't have a GB, so can't help you there.
