I was on a support call with Signaturesolar.com a talking through peak shaving,  and at some point was told discharge below 20% SOC would damage the battery.   Is this true?   I'd like to be able to get more than 80% from my battery.

The documentation indicates a setting no lower than 20% SOC is recommended.

My rudimentary opinion is as follows:

1 - a manufacturer recommendation usually means that it would/could void warranty.  I do not know EG4's stance on this.

2 - if you look at the discharge curve ( https://forum.eg4electronics.com/community/postid/816/) you will see that the last 20% drops fairly quickly, you won't be getting too much out of it.

3 - Remember that the BMS is going to shut down when cell voltage reaches 2.3 volts, so depending on how low you take it, you might trigger a BMS to go into low voltage shutdown.

Just my opinion.  I am paranoid about warranties and am always hesitant to go outside recommended operating parameters unless I have written recommendations from the manufacturer.

As far as damage?  I am not sure about that.  Will Prowse has done some videos regarding DOD and battery life cycles. You might check out his YouTube channel (DIY Solar Power with Will Prowse - YouTube) and see if you agree or disagree.

Best of luck and please keep us posted as to what you discover.

@joel-brodeur That all makes good sense.  I have watched that Will Prowse youtube which made me wonder.

cc @jared Maybe the EG4 team can provide a whitepaper on this topic? Dispell some of the myths and offer clarity.

I believe this whitepaper on maximizing battery lifespan primarily covers this topic:

Maximizing Battery Lifespan

That said, no damage will occur if the depth of discharge falls below 20%. However, consistently discharging below 20% may reduce the expected cycle life, which is rated for 7,000 cycles at 80% DoD.

Thank you for sharing that information.   Seems to confirm storing SOC , but no issue discharging below 20% as long as it is recharged back.   No warranty issue mentioned.

@bobandroslyn there would not be a warranty issue.
