I have a small 2400 watt generator that puts out a pure sine wave but only 120v, so only one leg of my 240v generator connection to the gridboss would be hot. Can this generator hooked to the gridboss still charge the batteries that are hooked to the flexboss21 inverter while it is supplying power to my house (no grid tie). During a power outage I would like to charge my batteries a little even if it's only a trickle charge.

You will need a 240V generator to connect it to the GridBoss.

@eg4eric Could the small 120V gen be connected through a Chargeverter to charge the batteries directly?  This solution would probably be less cost than purchasing a new larger 240V gen suitable for connecting directly to the Gridboss.

Yes, that's exactly what I do. I use a small 2,000 watt 120VAC generator through a Chargeverter. This is a manual start/stop solution and battery comms stays with the inverter.

@ianscott
That is the best solution!

@ianscott that's a direct connect to the batteries and then you have to make sure the inverter and chargeverter play nice together while solar and generator might both be outputting current. I think I am probably going to go with a Victron Autotransformer that can convert 120v to split phase 240 and connect it directly to the gridboss generator input and let the Gridboss do it's job.

@mccorb Hadn't heard of the Victron Autotransformer.  Thanks for the info.  I'll go take a look at the specs & pricing.

@ianscott what did you think of my Victron Autotransformer idea? Did you look at the specs? It's a little less expensive than a chargeverter. It's super efficient and leaves the AC to DC conversion to be performed by the flexboss. I watched a YouTube video of some guy that did this for other battery systems and was fairly happy. Also another guy hooked up an oscilloscope and if the generator outputs a clean sine wave then the split phase 240 is clean also. I guess if I had a crappy generator then the chargeverter is definitely a better solution but with a good inverter generator, albeit small, the decision isn't as clear. There is a Chargeverter competitor that is about half the price for about half the output amps that would work for me  also making my decision even harder.

@mccorb the autotransformer looks like a great idea as long as (like you pointed out) the AC source is clean enough; I'll still need to use the Chargeverter since my gen doesn't have very good THD.

Another application I thought about for the autotransformer is potentially allowing me to connect the 120V 15A V2L output on my EV to the Gridboss gen connection input; unfortunately my EV only has 120V 15A option at the moment;  however for connecting my EV and using it as a battery on wheels, I'd much rather have bi-directional charging so I'm also continuing to research that angle as well (most solutions seem quite expensive at the moment)

@ianscott I'm gonna look for some victron Autotransformer competitors also. If I find something like it for less money I'll report back.

@ianscott also do this on a Google search.... 'are the smart plugs on the eg4 gridboss bidirectional'. You may to be able to somehow hook in thru those.
