I've looked at most publications, and have watched many YouTube reviews, but have yet to learn if the Grid Boss is capable. I am looking to install a Grid Boss, along with 3 server rack batteries, and tie in my 8k auto start generator to my house panel, which has 200 Amp service (and many sub panels.) I don't have any solar yet, so no invertor for battery management duties. I was wondering if the Grid Boss can handle a situation where the grid has been down for a time and the batteries have become depleted. Can the Grid Boss turn on the generator and given sufficient output run the house load as well as charge the batteries back up? And if it gets to low can I black start this configuration?

  1. Thanks,

You stated that you have no solar and no inverter, is that correct?

If it is, then You need to have an inverter to take the direct current (48v) and 'invert' to 124/240v AC.

The Grid Boss is not an inverter. The Flex Boss will be your inverter and very necessary to use your batteries.

@kw5kw I was hoping to put off buying the inverter for a while for financial reasons. However I just realized that it is necessary to step the battery voltage up/down. Thanks for the input

Apologies for the delayed response. As mentioned, an inverter is required to connect the batteries to the Gridboss. You can install the GridBoss and keep it in bypass mode, allowing the grid to power the loads until you acquire an inverter and solar. However, in bypass mode, the GridBoss wouldn’t serve much purpose since it would simply pass power from the grid to the loads.
