Hi,

I have an 18kPV inverter/controller, a mixed array of panels (PV and micro-inverter) and 3 of the EG4 14.3kWh AW batteries.  The system is grid-tied and usually runs in back-up mode.  The inverter has been in operation for about 10 months and the batteries about 8 months.  There are no operational problems at this point, but I do want to make sure I am taking proper care of the system.

Earlier this year (in the spring) while sorting out difficulties with wifi, the support tech I was working with recommended re-balancing (or maybe he said "re-calibrating") the batteries.  He said that in a multi-battery system, this is something that should be done periodically.  He did all of the settings, and I didn't quite grasp the process.  I do recall that it involved setting the system to lead-acid, draining the batteries down a bit and then charging them back up.  I had to call back in to him to get the system back to proper back-up mode.

It's been a few months and I called back in to support to say "Hey, I think it might be time to do this again." and the tech I was connected to didn't seem to understand my request.  I couldn't get the tech to describe or agree to a re-balancing or re-calibration process.  They switched the system to self-consumption to exercise the batteries, but re-balancing (going to lead-acid mode, etc) was simply not something they seemed to be able to talk about.

Can the folks on the forum--especially any EG4 staff that may be watching--answer a couple of questions for me?

1. Is periodic re-balancing/re-calibration necessary or recommended for my system/configuration?

2. If so, how often should it be done, and what is the step by step procedure for my system?

Thanks!

Good afternoon!

1. Is periodic re-balancing/re-calibration necessary or recommended for my system/configuration?

We recommend an 80% Depth of Discharge (DoD), meaning you charge the batteries to 100% and discharge them down to 20%. This helps maximize battery lifespan and maintain optimal performance.

It is also recommended recalibrating the battery’s SOC by charging the battery to 57V approximately every 1–3 months.

The document link below has more information on the battery's health and DoD.

Battery Health and 100% DoDl

2. If so, how often should it be done, and what is the step by step procedure for my system?

You can use a 48v battery charger to charge the batteries to 57v or if you are using your system, you can set the inverter to Lead Acid Mode and set the Absorb Charge to 57v and Float to 54v. Once you charge the battery to 57v, the SOC will automatically recalibrate.
