GridBoss and FlexBoss install ... timing everything

I have now read the GridBoss manual twice and am concerned about the timing of installing everything. Hoping someone can help.

The background is that I need to replace my main panel and want to take the opportunity to get a GridBoss professionally installed as part of the job. I also have Enphase microinverted based solar that would move from the main panel to a GridBoss smart port. Given the fact that I want to do the FlexBoss and battery install myself, I want the main panel and GridBoss work done first and then spend the next 2+ weekends getting the FlexBoss up and running.

My question is this: can the GridBoss operate without an inverter connected and allow the AC coupling to work and sell back to the grid? In all the documentation, it is assumed an inverter is connected (section 6.7 in manual).

Also, on a side note, documentation says you're supposed to configure the FlexBoss with all power turned off and running off battery (section 6.6, first bullet), but how can I charge the batteries without grid connection so that I can configure it? Seems like a catch-22 situation.
