Existing: 200 amp meter/main with distribution panel with a 100amp 2-pole breaker feeding a shop panel 100 feet away. There are two existing conduits, one 2” and one unused 1”. We need to do connections so that the bussing of the meter/main/distribution is not subject to the 120% rule. The existing meter/main/distribution (MMwD) has the main breaker centered on the bus.

The modules and batteries will connect to a flexBOSS21 at the shop, about 100 feet detached from the residence. Can we use the flexBOSS21 output to feed a the 100amp shop loadcenter via  a 90amp main to which we will add a breaker to feed out to the GridBOSS Hybrid Inverter 1 connection?

The gridBOSS will be programmed for ZERO back feed, no adder to the utility bussing. The GridBOSS will have:

  • Utility connection via a 100 amp breaker in the MMwD panel
  • 8kw generator to the generator input
  • FlexBoss21 connected to hybrid inverter 1 input
  • A new panel with backed up loads in it
    1. Non-backed up loads will stay in the
      MMwD

Should the MMwD have zero loads in it, except the feed to inverter, and a non-backed up panel connected to the GridBOSS as well as the backed-up load panel? – I see those two connection points on the GridBoss.

Should the FlexBOSS 21 feed the loadcenter via its LOAD or GRID connection? Then, would it become a Smart Load or AC Coupled input versus a Hybrid Inverter 1 input to the GridBOSS? Or, if it is done as GRID, will the GridBOSS manage whether there is an adder to bussing of the MMwD?

There are two conduit runs to the shop, one 2” for power, one 1” for communications. We are trying to NOT have to add a new conduit to what is already there. I have hopefully uploaded the proposed connection, though I left the EG4 verbiage to NOT connect to the load of the FlexBOSS.

005 Proposd GridBoss

We are pretty sure the initial "proposed" is not good, we have modified it.

I am in a similar situation where I have an existing subpanel in my detached shop. I would like to put a FlexBOSS21 in the shop since I have more room for solar and batteries there than at the house. I do see in the GridBOSS manual that it repeatedly says that the load terminals on the FlexBOSS must be off, but there is a white paper titled Utilizing the Load Port on FlexBOSS when Coupled with GridBOSS that says it is fine to use the existing wiring. It's very similar to the original proposal above but hybrid inverter port on the GridBOSS would connect to the grid connection on the FlexBOSS instead of the panel. What I don't see in the white paper is any mention of communication lines. Do I need to run a communication line or is it handled through the grid port?

You may now use the LOAD connections IF your inverter is a particular release, it was something like "one is grey the other is white" or some oddity. GB does connect to GRID port, shop loadcenter can connect to the LOAD - IF your inverter falls within the whitepaper spec.

If you are talking about communication between the FB and GB, you need a set of two lines between the two.

Though our inverter does support the use of the LOAD connection, the homeowner opted to run a conduit and feed that panel from a breaker in the backed up loadcenter at the home. He wanted to be able to shut down the FB and still have the panel 'hot'.
